"Mesquite Beetles"  September 28 - October 18, 2007
Photos by Ernie Cox
These are photos of the Mesquite Beetles that come once every 7 years  and lay eggs in the mesquite trees. This last about a week and should be gone by the end  of the week. The branches die from the eggs of the beetles which help prune the trees.

Mesquite Girdler (Oncideres rhodosticta)

Female mesquite gridler chews rings around the small branches to lay their eggs. This one doesn't have eggs.

The dead branches on the mesquite tree are dead from the mesquite gridlers chewing rings around the small ends of the branches for laying their eggs. The dead ends will later fall off. Some people look at the mesquite gridler as tree trimmers. After laying the eggs, they will die and the eggs will hatch 7 yrs later. That will be the time the mesquite gridlers will be back. Their life time is from Aug. to Oct.
